The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) published a revised version of the Form I-9, Employment Eligibility Verification today (July 17, 2017). Employers will be able to use this revised version or continue using the Form I-9 with a revision date of 11/14/16 N through September 17, 2017. On September 18, 2017, employers must use the revised form with a revision date of 07/17/17 N. Employers should also continue following existing storage and retention rules for any previously completed Form I-9s.
This is the second mandatory change over the past year. The most recent change is particular to foreign entrepreneurs. The goal is to allow start-up founders to stay and work in the country. The I-9 change will include a modified list of acceptable documents that will enable these foreign entrepreneurs to present a foreign passport and a form I-94 as their proof of work authorization.
