We opened our doors in 1994 to assist large corporations and emerging companies with their unique requirements in the human resources and risk management fields. The need for background screening services and the driving force of ESS management catapulted the growth of additional sales staff, branch offices and state-of-the-art products.

The Birmingham Business Journal has awarded ESS the Fast Track 25 award for four consecutive years and named ESS Best in Business for 2004. ESS received the Women’s Business Enterprise National Conference (WBENC) Star award in 2005, and the Top Woman-Owned Business Award by DiversityBusiness every year since 2005. ESS has also made the ranks of the fastest-growing companies (Inc. 5000) in the United States, according to Inc. Magazine, every year since 2007. Sheila Benson, President, and CEO of ESS, was honored as Small Business Person of the Year by the Birmingham Regional Chamber of Commerce in 2006 and named among the Top Birmingham Women in 2007 by the Birmingham Business Journal. In 2009 Benson was named an Executive of the Year Finalist, and Jason Kimbrell, EVP, was honored as a part of the Top 40 Under 40 by the Birmingham Business Journal. And in 2012, ESS was named Birmingham Small Business of the Year by the Birmingham Business Alliance.
ESS is one of only a few providers to be recognized as accredited by the National Association of Professional Background Screeners (NAPBS). Received by ESS in 2010, this accreditation proves a background screening organization’s commitment to excellence, accountability, high professional standards, and confirms their industry expertise. NAPBS accreditation is achieved by a rigorous onsite audit conducted by an independent auditing firm, and by proving strict compliance with NAPBS standards.
In addition to its core employee screening and drug testing services, ESS has evolved into a full-service human resources and risk management solutions provider, offering customized solutions, integrations with over 85% of all applicant tracking systems, immunization tracking, and I-9 processing. ESS currently conducts over 1.4 million searches annually and is projected to perform 2 million background screenings per year by 2015.
